Dear members this maybe useful for some of us...The rotary sensor seems to be the common failure on our oil head engine (259 boxer R1100 and maybe 1150 as well ) Most of the people I have met with these boxer engines carry with them a spare rotary sensor in case it fails. Here is the testament of my friend in S'pore which face the same problem with the ignition. " Regarding the sensors, the fail cycle is about 3-4 yrs. But of course some may fail even earlier. According to local agent, the price was marked up 3 times. I am not sure how much each 1 cost but it should be something like Sin$ 200-300. I am trying to study the failure mode of the sensors. Probably it fails due to excessive moisture content in the tropical region. Oxidation may reduce the sensitivity of picking up pulses. All these were just wild guesses and await verifications. Once it is concluded, I will inform everyone." Team from S'pore and Malaysia with the R 11 engine do carry with them the spare sensor. in case your engine does not start properly after a wash or after riding in the rain, you can suspect it causes by this failure...
